Our free plug-in this month is a host-synced filter that can be used in a similar way to Xfer Records' excellent LFO Tool. Unsurprisingly, TAL Filter 2 is not as versatile as the Xfer Records offering, but if you would rather not splash the cash on LFO Tool, then this is a plug-in that will serve you well in its stead.
Filter 2 comes with four different oversampled filters that have been adapted from TAL's Noisemaker synth. If you select one of these filters as the modulation type, it is possible to saturate the input signal by raising the input volume with the input control. In addition, the plug-in allows you to modulate volume and panning. Volume modulation can be useful for tremolo or trance gate effects, while pan modulation can add interest to percussion or sound effects.
The graphical editor that controls the modulation shape is very easy to use; a single-click adds a new point, a double-click deletes a point. You can adjust the resonance of each of the provided filters with a rotary control. There is also a depth control for adjusting the intensity of the modulation, and there is a tempo control which can be used to ramp up the speed of the modulation; from x1 up to x32.
TAL- Filter 2 is available as a VST, AU or AAX plug-in. Both Mac and PC are supported and 32 and 64 bit versions are available. You can download the plug-in for free from the TAL website.
