Hey all, any recommendations for a cheap first set of studio monitors? (~$100) I just need something to listen to stuff out loud (don't really have the room/treatment for actually mixing with nice monitors, so I just use cans for now).
I'm afraid this price range is better suitable for headphones :/ I first heard proper bass with 5inch speakers from Focal (~$500). Previously, I was on 4inch Monkey Bananas ($250), which sounded great, but didn't give me much of a critical feedback. I'm naturally a fan of Presonus stuff and would check the mentioned Eris, but never heard them. Anyway, no matter what you 'll buy, put it on stands. The difference between speakers on the table and lifted is enormous. Good luck with the choice!
If all you got is one hundred, I would highly recommend trying to find a used pair of ATH-m50x's somewhere. As somebody who has owned reasonably nice headphones and a good entry level set of studio monitors, this is the best cost-effective option I am aware of.
Otherwise, another option would be to get some ATH-r30x headphones, but they end in a quarter inch connector, so you would likely need to run them off of an audio interface of some sort and not a mobile device. Hope this helps.

Klaudia & @Matthias K. are this month's SoundGym Heroes!
Great interview !!! All seems perfect, you guys look handsome, energetic and full of dreams in that pic.... (Klaudia is more like the pretty part... sorry Mathias lol). Keep it up for many many years to come !!! You are inspiring. My wish is that if you take that same pic 30 years from now, you will be still embracing each other with that same look in your (a bit more wrinkled) eyes. Beleive me... its doable !
