Hey guys, I am based in Shanghai, China and I'm new to SoundGym, signed up on the lifetime deal because... why not? I make electronic music, I have little music theory knowledge and am self taught in theory and music production. I need to get more serious with it as I love it and it helps me enjoy life. I thought that I'd post one of my more recent tracks, which at first was an experiment to see if I could put Twiki from Buck Rogers into a tune, and then morphed into a more spiritual message about life after death. It's not fully mixed because this is something I need to learn, hence joining up with SoundGym to get my ears in shape.
Any feedback would be apprieciated whether it be related to theory, arrangement, muddiness , mixing levels etc.
Hey Stuart, so my critiques are more from a mixing stand point. I agree with Vittorio about the 200 mud buildup but it isn't too bad. I would say that the kick could come down a bit because when you master the track you probably won't be able to squeeze out much more volume until it starts clipping. A big overall thing I noticed is that it leans to the left a lot in the stereo field. Try panning some things to the right for a more balanced sound. Last thing I want to say is that some of the ear candy in the middle was a little too forward. Probably just needs to be turned down a bit but you could also roll off the high end on those tracks to imply more distance. Everything else sounded pretty interesting. I liked the depth processing you did and overall the ambience was dialed in nicely. Keep it up
Nice tune! I noticed that there are multiple samples in this tune. A question for you (and anyone else reading this too): what is the official word on sampling and copyright infringement? Is there an acceptable threshold for the amount of sampling you are allowed to use in a track? I have a feeling that certain platforms would want this removed. Just asking about sampling because I love using samples too but am cautious of the over-zealous way that several platforms interpret and enforce copyright.
Thanks guys, not too sure how to reply to you individually as there is no reply button here. I'll take what you say on board and make some changes. At some point I'll work through some mixing tutorials and get it more mixed and mastered... but that'll take a little more time. Appreciate the suggestions, and good to know that I am not way off with my production.
In terms of sampling... I don't plan on making money from this song so I don't think its an issue. If I were to be putting it out for download behind a paywall then I am sure that I would beed to get permission from PJ Harvey, Twiki from Buck Rogers and the late Alan Watts.
Hello everyone, I hope you’re having a great day! I have a quick question: is there a way to completely reset the training level? Or is lowering it by 10 levels the maximum option?
