Hey folks! I've been training my ear here everyday and it's been so hard to get score on Dr. Compressor!!! Is there any tips to hear them!? I'm so aware it's important to train regularly I just wanted to know how people hear them!
Compression makes things less dynmaic, so the more consistent all the volumes are the more compressed it is. The more the volume varies the less compressed it is. Because the the attack and release times are both set short in the game the compressor is clamping down right away and ruining the transients, making them softer like Jason said above. So while a compressor with a slight slower attack time can be used to make kicks and snare more punchy in the game it is set to make them less punchy.
If you want to get these right, you have to listen to every part of the instrument. Then listen to it over and over until you hear which part of the instrument has more/less compression because there are exercises that require you to hear this level of detail. This will help you with your own music. For example, “Circle the Cycle” has too much sibilance and should have the 8khz-16khz reduced.
I listen to the transients to set the attack time, but, in general, don't forget to listen to the release / tail. I.e., how long does a cymbal ring out, how much room does the sound have in it, what does the sustain of a deep drum feel like. When you can hear the various differences when making changes on your settings, then you can compare your settings to the reference settings reliably and starting advancing through the game.
Also, accurate monitoring (good headphones or a proper set of monitors) is going to help a lot on this game, I think.
Hi friends! I out a new song out today. The vibe is psychedelic desert house. Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy it! The Youtube video has visuals that I made in Touchdesigner.
Yes, I like it a lot! Great... I'll go and see how the video program works. I also really liked making video montages, at the time I used Premier Pro. But this seems very interesting! Thanks :)
yesterday I was super sleep deprived and managed to hit 68 points at like 2am, basically asleep, with eyes closed half the time. Today I'm well rested and somehow stuck at around 10 points hahaha. Surely that must mean that it's best to mix when tired right ? :P
Now I mixed myself into exhaustion, then played SpacePan and it definitely felt easier tired! :D I think I'll leave to bed now, even though I almost get past Lio's score.
Haha @Lukas Veleminsky funny things happen musically when we're about to fall asleep. Some of the best songs in the world were written with a shut-eye.
I know I wrote half my thesis half asleep at 4 am because when I'm exhausted my brain is too tired to be anxious so I'm finally free to actually do the task that's been making me anxious all day haha !I'm sure it's the same with some sound stuff, you just feel more relaxed so you don't question stuff as much and it helps you follow your instinct and do better sometimes !
My experience here on SoundGym has taught me a crucial lesson: Progress is never a clear path. Sometimes it can feel like a straight shot to the top, and other times it can feel like utter failure. Regardless, persistence is the key to progress and growth. I've lost count how many times I scored 0 points on these games even though I'm Diamond Ears. Honestly, I couldn't care less. Sometimes it's annoying yeah but it doesn't bother me like it used to. Now, all I'm focused on just training my ears daily and my mixing and mastering skills have grown sharper because of it. There were times I questioned whether or not I was truly progressing, but I stayed persistent and just kept trying for better or worse. The next time you feel stuck, just remember that even getting to the point of being stuck means you've been moving forward.
No problem everyone, and it's funny that you brought up leveling up Way because it's rare for me to level up. I think it's been about a month ago since the last time heh
