Need objective opinion about the mix of the original song
Hi there!
I would really appreciate it If some of you guys and girls could take the time and post your opinion about the mix of the song posted below. That would mean a lot to me. Some “fresh” ears are always welcome, when working on mixes... Thanx!
Great song! The playing is really nice overall. I like the loose feel of the piano which makes it sound jazzier, but I have to mention that the drum fill at 2:57 is a bit too messy and distracting. Please don't quantise everything though, that's one of the worst things about modern music... It needs to sound like a human is playing, not a robot.
The instruments would benefit from more reverb and the cymbals definitely need to be turned down a bit (as some other people have said, and I agree). Using more reverb will definitely help because things which are too dry cause ear fatigue much quicker. Think of it in terms of how you'd hear the sound naturally if you were someone in the audience when this is being played at a concert. That sense of space is vital. If it's too dry then it's like you have your ear up against the piano!
Overall, good work! If you can get the mix to sound more natural with reverb and volume balancing, it will be great.
Hi Thank you all for your comments. They are all very helpful to me. @Ha F - I totally agree, I reduced the piano volume and added more room and it sounds better. I also added some delay (just a it) on hats. I treated dynamically the strongest hits on overheads and they don't pop out anymore so obviously. So nice pointers there! @Daniel McDonough - yeah.. you are right... some instruments are midi and do not sound as natural as I would want them to.... I'll see what I can do about that... @Vilhelm Kruse - Thanx for tip about 2.5 -3K. On what speakers/sound system are you listening to if you don't mind me asking? Right, the piano must go down a bit and some room - I agree. About the tightness - I'm really not the best piano player as you noticed :) I did intentionally leave some notes out of timing a bit (more natural sounding), but I must have exaggerated and is obviously noticeable... I'll fix that.
Hi I am wondering how hard it is to become an audio engineer I am 14 and I love music but I really wanna be a singer when I grow up so I think I can get closer to music by doing this what are y’all’s thoughts
Hi Soundgym Family! This is always my favorite stop of the day. I have a different type of feedback request I am hoping you can help me with. I recently started a YOUTUBE channel for audio engineers where I am hoping to put up content that deals more with skill building and decision making. I am only two videos in but being in front of a camera is far from natural for me as is being brief with my words.
I was hoping for some insight as to length, and the amount of content in the video. I simply love discussing audio and can kinda run on and on...I am also a huge Harry Potter fan if the shirt doesn't give it away,,,,
I understand just how busy everyone is, so if you are reading this and thinking about offering me some insight....Thank you so much.
I really like your videos. Although I'm not an audio engineer I can find value there for improving my mixes. I like the make not just some mixing tips, but more in-depth videos about different techniques and also about how to think about the work, the physical side, and all of that. I personally prefer videos about 10 to 15 minutes. 20 minutes is the maximum I think. If it's a longer video, you really start to consider if it's that interesting topic for you to watch it. Hope to see more interesting videos about mixing from you soon!
