*In general* - the shorter the release time, the more pronounced the effect. Very short release times you hear an almost distortion-like effect as well.
^ ya I agree it starts getting really distorted. I notice it can be confusing with the distortion that comes with fast attack times and 8:1 ratios as well, so listen through the combinations of options carefully. setting the volume correctly is key
