Hello everyone :) I'm sharing my latest project Ultimo (a lot of imagination in the title lol xD) This track has some problems that with a lot of effort, due to the very high transients, I tried to manage as best as possible. In order not to influence your opinion, I won't say anything, but I would like to read your considerations to understand if my considerations are correct. Thanks in advance to anyone who wants to give their opinion. https://on.soundcloud.com/53TMqqg5ZZjutC5m9
Hey! Yes, kick is pretty crazy. And some melodic instruments can be little closer, more in focus, have more excitment. A rhythm section have a very full frequency spectrum and instruments sound dull in comparison with kick and hh. And I probably suggest to move in adding excitments to instruments, rather than killing it in a rhythm.
Great sounding track! Kick is very dominating, especially the transient.. perhaps softing the transient with a compressor / transient designer so it glues more with the track? or replacing if that is easier.. everything feels quite set back in the mix, would be good to be a bit more 3D with some sounds closer, personally I'd like those Toms much more upfront, they sound brilliant! 👏
Thanks so much guys for your comments! I add a suggestion to my message: it's not the kick that crushes too much and activates the compression on the bass mix. It's another instrument in the mix. I'm very curious to know who will guess! This can also be a good exercise for beginners, but it can be a good exercise for all of us ;)
I honestly think that it sounds pretty good. It may be a little bit sharp in some places but it still sounds more alive than most electronic music available these days.
Obrigado :)
Thank you very much Dylan :) I'm very pleased that you liked my track! Yes you are right because I have a bit of trouble keeping some transients under control that drive me crazy. If I push too much I take everything too far back. Anyway I have to work on it and try to solve it. Thanks for your comment :)
So what would it be? I'll try to play the game so... maybe the hats could have a more marked groove in terms of velocity? like they just leave room for the kick to suggest breathing at each 1 of the bar ? but it's certainly about much more subtle things than that actually, I guess. You are asking kinda question here... ahaha your music (and your sound) is very very good Vittorio, this is my in-depth analysis. Love it ! (are you planning to release somethings soon ? or maybe you exclusively play your tracks live or something ? just a personal curiosity ) Best !
Less of a mixing issue for me, rather arrangement. The gold of your track is 2.20 in. People have short attention spans nowadays, I would compact the track and begin with that. It was really nice!
Thanks guys :) @ Jules So: it seems impossible but the problem of the transients that drive the clipper and the limiter crazy is given by the Synthesizer which starts at 1min and then again at 2min 42 (that sort of voice that seems to laugh, as if saying: haahaaa hahaaa. I used many filters to get that effect, which I wanted to be closed and behind. But in the end I went crazy: both with volume automation to keep the transients at bay, then with clippers and 2 limiters. Now, however, it's actually too suffocated. I'm trying to figure out how to bring some life back to this experiment! I'd like to put my music online, I'm working on it, but I'm always afraid that there are many problems and to be honest, even that I'm not good enough yet. But then in the end, no one is perfect and so maybe I should wake up!
@Sweet Sonix: In fact the track could be shortened. it's true that concentration is reduced today, although in general this style leads some pieces to play for up to 7 minutes. obviously you have to be able to keep listening awake. I still have to work on it.
Thank you very much for your appreciation!!! Love ;)
Your mix and master sounds fantastic, honestly I don't hear any issues there. I'd say focusing on arrangement and composition will be the biggest factors in progressing further. Always trim the fat wherever possible, that's my motto at least :)
Nice track! Like the layering of sounds and the sounds popping up here and there. Very airy but I guess this is what was intended. Had the impression there was quite a bit of distortion at the beginning of the track but might just be the sounds you decided to go for with loads of transients and harmonics. Great work nonetheless.
Alright, and what if the synthesizer wandered a bit more, like a panning and widening game, considering the 'closed and behind' direction as said ? Well, I know my suggestions may be a bit vague aha, I'm just enjoying to share these novice ideas rn; I haven't quite grasped all the technical details about transients and limiting ++ effects yet.
Just a thought-provoking question, what does 'good enough' really mean ? I mean yeah, WAKE UP ! Haha, just kidding of course, I understand. It’s also part of this fun game, to sculpt with precision. What seems important is not to get too frustrated, as that might end up costing more than it's brings in...! Could it be 'perfect' before technically perfect ? But that's almost a different topic altogether, and obviously, this speech has nothing original, and you are already asking yourself all these universal questions, it's just as a friendly reminder, you brought this upon yourself ! ;)
That being said, it's also important, logic, and essential to take the time to steer where you want to go.
Really nice sounding and original track. The mix sounds good ! Nice depth and width. And feeling the dynamics is really nice too. You don't want to push the master (or busses) a bit more though ? I might be addicted to loudness but I think it could help bringing some sounds more to the front and add a touch of color and warmth to your mix.
Apart from this, the only thing that jumped to my ears was the kick that felt too strong, and a bit separated from the rest, especially when listened to at low volume. Makes the rest feel a bit tiny. The impression might come also that apart from the kick there is not a main element surfacing. At least one or two sounds could be more beefy / present to have a contrast and something to focus attention ?
For example, this off beat synth playing the G, it sounds slightly dull to me. Of course it can be an artistic choice to keep this mellow, soft tone in the mix. The bass also feels a bit small sometimes, especially when a lot of parts are playing. But it sounds nice and somewhat analogue.
Hi Thibault :) I tried to bring the volume to -8 LUFS (which would be a good standard for this genre) but after -10 LUFS both the clipper and the limiter were working too much. I could have taken better care of transients when creating, but unfortunately that didn't work. For the kick (you might be right. What did you listen with: monitor headphones... because then on the low frequencies it also depends a lot on the listening device) In fact I had to fight a lot between the kick drum and the bass (I opted for a stereo bass, come on 300/400hz up) and this obscured the kick, which perhaps I pushed too much. I should have tried with more parallel saturation and less volume, perhaps. Then at the end of the day the CPU of the computer also starts acting crazy and so I have to limit the interventions, but in 10 days a new upgraded PC will arrive and I will finally have solved the performance problem! Yes, I liked the synthesizer in G so it was a little monotonous and backwards, it gave me a feeling of peace as usual ;) But I really appreciate your point of view and I thank you so much for the time you dedicated to me. Much appreciated, thanks :)
Hi Jules hehehe I'll explain mine: pretty good. For about 8 years I worked for a radio station in Rome. I selected the tracks that the labels and distributors sent me, I created articles for the promo of the new releases and I selected 15 tracks every week for my Podcast: AltroVerso Selecta. I calculate that I received around 300/500 tracks a week O_o So I had to develop a very critical listening... this is reflected in my music today. I always find that it's not good enough (I appreciate what I do anyway, I like what I do, but I'm always too critical of myself). But I completely agree with what you wrote. In fact I have decided to start and publish my music and in the next few months also on Spoty. I was undecided on the distributor, I think I will use Ditto Music. Thank you for your precious time ^^
2 props
