Hey all! Just joined this community. I started using Cakewalk before it was called Cakewalk and it was a MIDI sequencer marketed by Twelve Tone Systems that started right here in my home state of Massachusetts.

I would use it in my studio in the 80s to sync MIDI devices with my multitrack tape deck. Cakewalk then became Cakewalk Pro Audio in the 90s where you could record audio to your computer. I owned it up until version 9 which is shortly before it became Sonar. Unfortunately, Inever really got to enjoy doing much multitrack digital recording into Cakewalk back then because both computers with the needed horsepower and AD/DA converters back then were very expensive so I could only afford 2 tracks worth at the time. I then left studio life for the corporate world in the early 2000s, doing live shows for another few years but wouldn't return to the studio again until 2020.

I set up a home studio with a treated room, also running Sonarworks, put together a beast of a computer with a few Scarlett 18i20s and started using Cakewalk again. What I get from this free version blows away the paid version I used in the 90s. I am in the midst of recording an EP all in the box for the first time ever.

It's pretty insane what I can do with a free DAW and plugins (some paid) compared to what I could do in my analog studio back in the day (I still have my 32 channel board and 16-track deck).

Be well!

Sure, the bad thing is that in fact this free version will be not supported anymore. I can say that this free DAW has practically all the things that are needed included. You can do a lot with the stock plugins and the console however there is one thing I don't like. That thing is Cakewalk UI looks poor on HD resolution 1920x1080 and the interface has no ability to adapt whell to lower screen resolution. Not everybody has 4K screen. Apart from that I like it.
Cheers

I think if the price range for the upcoming Sonar, (or Next whatever) will be kept in the range similar of Reaper for example, then i dont mind if the support for CBB will sease. Seems usable without that bandlab dongle software, but no new feature updates anymore..
Sonar is mentioned to have vector -based UI, which definitely helps with lower res, displays etc.
