I'd have 2-3 ideas, like more variety in the Olympics-rotation (some of the other workout games, Compressionist, EQ-Knight ), sample re-arranger (where one has to re-build a track made out of another sample) , Mastermind (mastering 2-3 tracks together, compression, EQ, etc with a reference example), Enveloper( imitate ASDR parameters for a Synth by ear). different Distortion types......
Thank for the ideas @Mark Phillip Marphy Horch. Couldn't find anything related in the link but a very detailed and helpful answer that you provided regarding how to earn Soundcoins. I couldn't do better π
having more variation in the peak master and kit cut game, e.g. less gain in the boost / cuts (just 3 / 6 /9 db) and the possibility to compare the answer, like it is implemented in other games.π
I would love it if we could compare the results of the scores and percentiles of the 17 exercises of each one, it would motivate us to surpass ourselves and to improve even more! To have comparisons would give reference to our level and those of the others π
I'd like to see, after a choice is made and the result displayed (the stage is now over), an extra button appear called My Guess where you can click it and hear exactly how your guess sounded, and then compare it with the actual right answer by clicking a right answer button.
I know this is doable for certain games that already have a Practice Mode (meaning the game itself is capable of recreating any possible guess value within the game range - because Practice Mode indeed already does create any value within the range.)
So I'd limit my request to those games: Stereohead, Peak Master, DB King, Kit Cut, Pan Girl, Bass Detective, Delay Control, and Feedback Eliminator.
Other games either already have a way to do this (Balance Memory), or it wouldn't make sense (EQ Cheetah).
I'd love to have Duels back, including a new way of matching players as we discussed months ago, and maybe adding new competition modes like tournaments, teams... ANd don't forget the slot machine, it used to be rather kind with me!
How about a function to sort the posts on the Dashboard? I mean not only to see only posts from a specific space like when you open that space's page, but to sort by time posted, posted by friends or followed members, own activity or the way it is right now, most recent activity ?
Oh, and the possibility to individually set Hotkeys. Maybe Better Midi-support. It's not as much of a hassle like the qwertz-layout pain when playing sight-reading games over at ToneGym, but it would be a big QoL improvement, imo π
I forgot to mention: it would be great to have new, fresh samples added to the existing ones from time to time, especially on instrument sets... Maybe there could be a space where users can submit their own hi-quality, self-recorded instrument samples for you to choose, curate, process and eventually include them in their respective slot...
I know a new set of samples from members' recent releases is available from time to time, but the instruments sets are very useful for training and sometimes my mind explodes when listening for the 2386th time a piano tune...π₯
I would like for all games to have the practice mode available, and on the games that use songs, I would like to see the name of the song and artist listed somewhere. Sometimes songs from the gym get stuck in my head, and it is hard to find them. It is also a nice way of supporting artists further, I guess...π
maybe it's only me but there are times where some game stages just don't make sense, for example a peak master sound that only has up to 600 Hz (just for example) but the game expects you to identify a boost at 9khz
Being able to have a practice mode where you can limit a few choices down and beat them to death, for example, DB King, I really need to be able to concentrate on some of those -4 vs -4.5 differences. When those pop up, after you are getting things like -14 v -21, well, it's just a guess.
Similarly be able to limit things to a range for Kit Cut and Peak Master. I really need to concentrate on the 1k-2.5k range.
Compression... Compression is such a varied subject...
perhaps too complicated, but... what if games where MIDI compatible and work with CC orders? that would be even better than keyboard shortcuts... everyone could spend the necessary time setting all the games up according to their midi controllers... and after that.. bÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀm... enjoying the games to the top... the experience would be much better.
Aaron Walker. Man I could not agree with you more. I did not discover the feedback eliminator was a frequency trainer at first so I ignored it - which greatly slowed me down because the automatic selection of games never included it either until I looked at it one day & discovered it's really a Frequency Identification Trainer.
Also the inability to focus on small areas of difficulty is almost non-existent - where it seems they want your worst skills to hold you back instead of focusing on exercises to fix problem areas.
In all there are a lot of weaknesses with this program. It seems they are balancing milking the customer for extra money, while sacrificing performance & momentum, in favor of the house.
But performance & momentum are powerful learning tools to activate & instead they largely ignore them. I do hope they listen or they will eventually be eclipsed by a competitor. I sincerely hope they are just because right now they have a virtual monopoly & do not appear to be investing enough profits in the quality of customer learning. That said I still think it's currently the best out there - at least in English.
They don't seem to value joy & enthusiasm & instead seem to believe that the ONLY obstacle is brain plasticity so they lean more towards frustrating people - which is very old school & less effective than focusing on strengths & less on weaknesses. It also reflects a detrimental over-simplification of neural science. IMO
In fairness to them - I don't know the whole story. Maybe they're already working on a 2.0 version?
How about increasing the ticket price of Space Pan Champ? it takes 5 mins to get to a score of minimum 80. All other contests are only secs long and nobody wants to spend so long even though it is cheaper than the other two olympic games. This causes the Jackpots for EQ to be 4 even 5 times higher than for the game that takes the longest to play... Oh yeah, Why are the ToneGym contests more expensive than the ones here? There are less players, and there are less ways to earn coins, yet, their weeklies are more expensiveπ€·ββοΈ
@Sean West wow you really seem to dislike this platform lol.
I had no issue discovering that feedback eliminator was a frequency identifier. I discovered it within a day of using the platform. Also I was curious to look at all of the games as soon as I started in order to figure out what they're about. Name doesn't bother me, and it feels pretty intuitive. And it makes sense as a practical application for live sound to call it feedback eliminator - to be able to hear a frequency that is feedbacking and go to your mixing desk and then turn it down (I've had to do this in jam/rehearsal sessions, and have definitely seen its necessity in live sound at venues etc).
Narrowing in on areas you want to improve on definitely makes sense and is a great suggestion - but only thing is it probably shouldn't count towards points since people can use it to their advantage and just pick a section they find easy and milk that to move through levels and SPI. (Not that SPI should be the primary motivation for using SoundGym, but it IS a good motivator, and its effects would get diminished if it becomes easier to find ways around levelling up the hard way so to speak). But totally as a practice option I think this would be great.
I think SoundGym could of course keep improving, but overall my personal opinion is it's designed quite well - and when I started using it I was very happy with it and the benefits, thought it was a very clever training platform and was surprised I haven't found anything like it before. I've been using it for about 3 months straight and it's been hugely helpful and I enjoy most of the games with perhaps the exception of delay control and DB King at this point.
I just find it surprising you're having such a negative experience with SoundGym? Not sure what it is you're hoping to get out of it that you're not currently getting?
But yeah, maybe like Aaron Walker said, if they created a soundgym training room so to speak - where you could set your own parameters for a game and just play that indefinitely. I.E. set frequency range, frequency boost intensity, instrument pick (out of the ones you have), and have it randomize within that. Same for the DB or Delay for instance, just picking delay ranges etc.
Would be a good alternative to the current practice mode which just lets you audition the different settings. It would actually allow you to practice with trial and error before entering a game. But of course should still keep the current practice mode as well in order to be able to audition & hear the different frequencies/delay settings/db volumes etc.
Maybe to be able to choose one setting in practice mode against which you can compare in compare mode. It might reveal how your weak spots, anchor points or stronger versions of the stimulus relate to your answers.
@Sean West@Kevin Krouglow re: Feedback Eliminator (FE)... Well, I am quite critical of the platform, as Sean is, but I also think we both agree that we like it. We just see room for improvement. Now, I get a lot of pushback when I make suggestions or have critical questions, on the basis that they are the experts and they have AI and etc... Fair enough, but no system is perfect. And as Sean said, there is no transparency, so we don't see comments or feedback from developers. I worked in IT for 20 years, and I can't tell you how many times a developer would tell me that he optimized a piece of code... How often can you (re-)perfect something? Makes me think I don't understand optimize :)
Seems like FE should be a core tool, but I didn't get it added into my rotation until I tried an exercise in the gym, and that was after many months and I had Golden Ears. So that seems kinda odd. But still, I like the platform :) I just see holes :P It's a blessing and a curse :P It's all good.
Thanks for your suggestions, advice and also criticism. There is always a place for improvement and we will surly take it into account when considering future development π
@Aaron Walker totally fair and it's great to be critical and have suggestions for improvements. And I understand the frustration of not hearing back from the developers about the feedback/comments. For the record, I also wouldn't mind at all if feedback eliminator did have the name changed haha - it just doesn't currently bother me in the slightest and I don't see it as an issue regardless of what it is called.
If they released a new game and called it Sound Machine Galore for instance - I probably wouldn't care because I'd just go check out the game right away and figure out what it was for myself.
Also not sure if you have paid or free accounts? Because for me, with a paid account, the rotation of the 5 games also doesn't matter much as I frequently just pick which games I want to play after a quick workout round when I want to develop/hone in on a specific skill. If it's about how their algorithm works to select games for you, that's something I haven't given any thought to haha - couldn't care less about the A.I. on here. I have smart training off as well. I figure I know what I want to work on and develop and I'd rather tailor that myself. (If anything, I was even thinking about disabling all but 5 games at a time that I want to focus on, then switching it up as I see fit.) And the price for a paid account in my opinion is pretty affordable. Benefits definitely significantly outweigh the costs for me. Noticed huge improvements in 3 months of using this platform. Sure eventually there are diminishing returns, but the way I look at it, is that there are diminishing returns with anything, so though the platform could without a doubt be improved further (and I'm all for suggesting ways it could be), I personally think the plateaus are primarily not inherent to the platform's design, but rather inherent to developing any skill. Being able to hone in on a trouble area would for sure be useful, but I think it would overall be a small benefit onto a platform that already does a pretty good job at developing essential listening skills. I suppose the way I see it is currently the platform can take you say 80% of the way there - and if they implement specific practice modes etc and other benefits it can take you another 5-10%, which is great, and definitely worth doing, but it's not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things - at least not a huge enough deal to make it sound like the platform is going to be eclipsed by competitors and primarily cares about money rather than improving and wants you to be held back by your problem areas rather than develop your skills etc.
I think I just found @Sean West 's response surprising because it seems predominantly frustrated and negative. As though the platform is causing him a lot of angst and is inherently horribly flawed in his eyes. I suppose the vibe that comes across to me is one of frustration and net negative so to speak, as oppose to net positive with room for improvement. Which is fair and could be his experience, but then why use the platform at all if it's primarily frustrating? Haha. There are other ways to develop listening and audio skills. And if that's not the case, and it is like you say still a predominantly positive experience, then the way it was communicated in his comment (without further context) came across as predominantly negative - at least to me.
Eitherway, all good here too! I was just surprised by the predominant frustration I picked up in Sean's comment and felt like my experience with this platform has been very different, which prompted me to comment on that.
Mixdown training room is a wonderful space with a very nice group of people led by @MAGGHY JI who works very hard every week. I don't know, any recognition? Some soundcoins? something? After all, what we do there is the biggest training session. My humble opinion without wishing to offend anyone.
@Kevin - criticizing something for it's defects does not equal disliking it. We criticize family members whom we love more than anyone else. I think you're projecting your attitudes onto my opinions. They don't arise from liking or not liking anything. They arise from decades of experience educating people & developing software for them.
Besides I'm answering the person who asked for improvements. If the only way everyone responds to questions like he asked is to suggest new features then how are they going to find out what people DON'T like about their program?
You seem so troubled by my opinion that you seem to have been compelled to argue with my points. Thanks for taking the time but I didn't post here to argue with people about their opinions. I posted to answer Noam's question.
@Sean West well you're doing a similar thing then (; - i.e. projecting your attitudes onto me - for I am not that troubled by your opinion nor am I really arguing that much from my perspective. I'm just sharing my own opinion/perception of this platform in contrast to you. Especially since I've also seen another post of yours recently where someone was asking about which games they found the hardest starting out and you went on about how Balance Memory is poorly designed and to quote you: Clearly soundgym isn't about being the best they can be. They just want to coast on what they've got. (Here's that post https://www.soundgym.co/space/talk?id=EQPL4AJJKMD&t=71O5WYZARHU)
The way you came off to me, in this last comment as well, is predominantly negative/grumpy and in your last comment to me, kinda antagonistic. By contrast, Aaron Walker seemed friendly and pleasant in his response. Perhaps this is the common byproduct of communication via a social platform rather than in real time with facial expressions and intonation.
For example saying:
Thanks for taking the time but I didn't post here to argue with people about their opinions
is a touch passive aggressive (;
You can post whatever you want however you want - to me or whoever else you want. I was just surprised you seemed so bothered by this platform and wanted to share my surprise :p which I'm also entitled to do.
If I really try to think about my motivation behind why I posted a reply to your comment here, its because the impression I get from you by the way you post is one of immense frustration with this platform, and I'm just very surprised, because my experience is seemingly so drastically different than yours based on how you express your experience here. So it's part surprise, part curiosity, part confusion, part finding it funny that you seem so bothered by things that don't seem to be that big of a deal to me. So that's why I posted. Not because you upset me or anything like that by criticizing SoundGym, and I'm not bothered that you're displeased or anything like that, or expressing your displeasure.. just simply that there's a dissonance to my experience and it confuses me. It's like when you go somewhere with a friend, or like watch the same movie, and you overall loved it and the friend rants about how terrible this movie is, there's like this sense of What? Really? Why? Haha. Know what I mean?
Anyways. No hard feelings from my end - minus being a little thrown by your passive aggressive: I didn't post here to argue with people about their opinions - comment. That felt unnecessary to me.
@Kevin Thanks for your thoughts, and I guess I'm not here to defend Sean, but this post is about what would you like to see, so it does lend itself to criticism and bitching, and perhaps would not lend itself to an overall world view :) . But enough of that :) It's all good, I'm progressing, I think. It could be better, but it's still good. They have my money :) Until next time!
One more... :) On things like Kit Cut, it tells you what the actual frequency was (after you guess), but how about also showing the Q and # of db (again, after you guess)? For compression exercises, similarly, tell me what you are doing :)
Yes I @Aaron Walker. I would love to be able to turn on some kind of detailed analysis mode if I get an answer right or wrong.
Example: I fail to identify the correct boosted frequency and before I move on I am allowed to go in and see the actual curve or I can sweep through the spectrum and listen for the changes when getting close or further away from said frequency.
The Balance Memory game has this. Regardless whether you fail or pass it shows you the correct answer and you can play with the balance until you made the connection and then you move on.
Initially, I struggled with the compression related games because I just could not understand it nor hear it. I just wish there had been videos explaining exactly what to listen for or hints of what to listen for especially in the games. This would have saved me a ton of research/time.
Hello, - get the time to ear/analyse the responses - make the keyboard shotcuts availlable for all games and for azerty ;) - in Stereohead, a button to toggle center / panned
@Gregor E. I believe you are Looking for the comparison hotkey, C, check out the little keyboard Button on the game start pages. I'm not sure if Scale games have it, but every game with A B multiple choice question style stages has that. For the games that work with scales it might be a bit more difficult to implement that function as that would require the game to save a broader spectrum of variations the play could've picked from and would be needed to kept for us to compare, though the most complex variations a game has, the EQ Mirror has the feature, so π€·ββοΈ
@Ziggy Shpakovsky Great Video, I saw a similar one about the Distorted Reality Gameπ I still agree with @Joshua Silva that finding those Videos through asking the community might be suboptimal, as many games already have some sort of video instructions showing a pretty short intro but those are more related to the mechanics of the game. π€
Plus I don't know about how the youtubers label, tag spread their videos and or even if any of the dev team knows them and if they do, faster or slower than some community members, you know what I mean π ?
- More different samples for the Compressionnist: guitar, voice, etc. - A way to customize the training tools. For example, for DB King, choose to train only for levels between +/-4 and 0dB, for Boost Champ or Kid Cut train between 2 frequency values chosen by the user, for Compresssionit choose to be tested only on attack or release times, etc.
I'm on a free account since I do music just for fun and have other more important expenses. But I'd be willing to pay access to only selected games (even just for limited time). Or pay for exchange one of the three basic games from time to time. Don't even need the statistics.
A tier even higher than diamond... maybe like Platinum when you reach 3 million SPI or something like that... I like having goals to work to. It keeps me extra motivated. π
In the compression games, options to train with vocals, and instruments, especially ones with more prominent transients, like a pick on guitar, or piano. Maybe even whole songs too π After all compressors are a huge part of mastering...
It also would be useful to add a limiter setting or an infinity setting for ratio on the compressor game! That way limiters are covered also within the same game. It could be something that becomes available in somewhat higher levels or something.
