Need objective opinion about the mix of the original song
Hi there!

I would really appreciate it If some of you guys and girls could take the time and post your opinion about the mix of the song posted below. That would mean a lot to me. Some “fresh” ears are always welcome, when working on mixes...
Thanx!

Hi David, this isn't really my genre, but I'll try to provide feedback anyway.

1: I think the piano is a little too loud overall
2: Add some reverb or delay to the piano as well, it's a bit dry
3: crash cymbals are a bit too loud
4: The mix is a little muddy in the low-mid range
5: HH are also a little dry, considering you've got reverb on the kick, I would add some delay to the HHs
6: The open HH is also a tad too loud
7: Toms sound nice
8: I would bring up the bass guitar a little more

Overall, nice work on the instrumental.

Hi, interesting Song, cant say i have super much experience with that kind of genres. I would maybe get the piano a bit more in the background, mostly be reducing the volume a little bit and maybe adding a bit more room. But mostly in volume, in the later parts it really dominates and drowns out the rest of the song imo.
i really like the bass, the pattern played and the sound work well for me.
the toms also sound good and the snare is not bad as well, maybe have it (sn) a little louder?
For the cymbals, i think they can work just as well a little quieter overall. During single hits its not as bad but when played a bit more, it whashes outother stuff. Goes for more or less all cymbals imo.

All that is subjective of course but that would be my thoughts. All in all you did a good job!

things are sounding a little robotic to me...maybe work on some adding some human elements to your MIDI. the elements dont sound like their style if that makes sense; like, the kick is almost a rock or metal sounding kick and you have a jazzy hip hip vibe going on.

OK, about the mix.

The piano screams in my ears in the 2500-3000 hz range. When you take that down it is way more pleasant to listen to.

The piano has a very closed-up mic sound and no room at all. That, coupled with a not-super-tight performance, is not complementing your composition. You can mask the performance part by putting the piano in a room, sort of speaking.

Obviously there is no right and wrong in mixing, but if you want to sound like other songs in your genre then compare your songs and your sound to something you like so you have something to aim for. The volume of the instruments especially is something you could pay attention to here.

Performance-wise the instruments and the musicians are not tight. You can either practice to play more accurately, do more quantization, or take care of the notes that stand out as being out of time individually. Right now it sounds to me as if you have quantized some but not all and overall it just isn't coherent.

And you are putting your work out there and kudos to for you for doing that! It is the way forward ❤️

I would mix it with the idea that the piano is king and balance everything to that(its the only element that evolves a lot like a vocal). Feels and sounds like everyone is trying to win. Els the mix is okay, a bit hot for my taste. hope this helps :)

Great song! The playing is really nice overall. I like the loose feel of the piano which makes it sound jazzier, but I have to mention that the drum fill at 2:57 is a bit too messy and distracting. Please don't quantise everything though, that's one of the worst things about modern music... It needs to sound like a human is playing, not a robot.

The instruments would benefit from more reverb and the cymbals definitely need to be turned down a bit (as some other people have said, and I agree). Using more reverb will definitely help because things which are too dry cause ear fatigue much quicker. Think of it in terms of how you'd hear the sound naturally if you were someone in the audience when this is being played at a concert. That sense of space is vital. If it's too dry then it's like you have your ear up against the piano!

Overall, good work! If you can get the mix to sound more natural with reverb and volume balancing, it will be great.

Hi Thank you all for your comments. They are all very helpful to me.
@Ha F - I totally agree, I reduced the piano volume and added more room and it sounds better. I also added some delay (just a it) on hats. I treated dynamically the strongest hits on overheads and they don't pop out anymore so obviously. So nice pointers there!
@Daniel McDonough - yeah.. you are right... some instruments are midi and do not sound as natural as I would want them to.... I'll see what I can do about that...
@Vilhelm Kruse - Thanx for tip about 2.5 -3K. On what speakers/sound system are you listening to if you don't mind me asking? Right, the piano must go down a bit and some room - I agree. About the tightness - I'm really not the best piano player as you noticed :) I did intentionally leave some notes out of timing a bit (more natural sounding), but I must have exaggerated and is obviously noticeable... I'll fix that.

Again thank you all , you guys are great!

Thank you Dylan Neal - I really like your thinking. Already working on fixing volume and wetness of the mix. I don't like everything quantised ether...
