New to Soundgym - What exercises give the most return for your investment?
With 20 or so games on here, I'm trying to not spread myself too thin. I'm planning on doing 30-45 min a day, and I'd like some opinions on what the crucial must-do exercises are. Right now, I'm thinking EQ, compression, distortion, db king and panning. Thoughts?
Welcome to SoundGym! I let SoundGym decide for me, and it covers all of those, pulling up my weakest ones a little more often. Go to Account Settings-Training Preferences and turn Smart Training on if that sounds good to you. All the best!
my opinion is the compressionist is the most valuable, and all the EQ games are also valuable, there's like 5 I like them all. The rest range from maybe valuable to I don't think valuable at all, namely pan girl. pan girl is fun but I don't think it helps make better mixes. Oh, the delay game is pretty good, for hearing reverb type effects. but the game actually made for reverb is really hard, I barely use that game.
It's been good, but some exercises are much more vital than others. For example, Peak Master - Being able to tell frequencies is a must, so if Smart Training doesn't include that, I'll just play it by myself.
I'm pretty sure Peak Master is in my Smart Training. The program is good at steering you where you need to go. For instance, Bass Detective didn't show up in my workouts until I was better at the other frequency recognition games.
I'm in this for the long haul, so I don't generally do more than the daily workout and the three rhythm games. I've been sticking to the workout daily though. If I do score a 0 in a game, I'll generally play again so I at least score something.
Also, some days, I'm just sharper than on other days, so I don't let it discourage me. It's a gradual progression, at least for me.
Hey there, welcome to soundgym! One thing I think is really helpful is to go into your stats and see where you're performing poorly compared to other games and focus on those, thereby improving your weaknesses. I'd also think about what's particularly applicable to your style of music. For example, if you're making electronic music or hip hop, Bass Detective is a must. Best of luck!
Welcome, so the games I recommend starting with are Peak Master, Compressionist, and Distorted Reality. Those will give you a good rounded training session. A lot of the EQ games are the most practical but just start with Peak Master, then after a while you can add Kit Cut, and then after that you're free to add whatever EQ games are left. My biggest word of advice is to keep training no matter what. Even if you don't feel like you're making progress with the levels or you keep scoring low, that's okay. It's part of the process. I've been at Diamond Ears for almost a year now and I will still score 0 points while genuinely trying. The consistency is all that matters. So keep at it and I wish you the best of luck
The most important thing is to be consistent. Be patient. Do not worry about your score. It is about you training your ears, not what everybody else is doing. I tell my students that ear training is a lifelong endeavor. 🎹
Honestly Metal and any Heavy Rock type sounds are the easiest to train with since they're the fullest sonically speaking but you're certainly free to choose whatever genres or instruments you prefer to train with
Agree with Paul. In the end it's all about developing skills at an almost instinctive level, and that takes bucketloads of constant practice. It's also best to let Soundgym choose the sound. - don't restrict yourself to just one set of sounds. In the end, you are going to have to detect boosted frequencies with just a set of bongos as well as with a full orchestra.
I almost always let Soundgym choose the sound. I want to be able to hear the frequencies in the various settings instead of picking a sound source that I know will make it easier. My goal is to improve, regardless of the score.
I did use some coins to pick artist sounds that land close to niches I like. Electronic, Ambient, EDM, etc. Having new sounds in the mix has been helpful in keeping things fresh. Something to keep in mind when you've heard I am your dragon love a dozen times. :)
